What is ILEX Course about?
ILEX is the professional and examination Body representing practicing and trainee legal Executives. The qualification is keenly sought after in local, government, industry and commerce. It is also an established avenue for those wishing to qualify as solicitors. Once qualified you will find that being a Legal Executive is an excellent career choice.
Duration of the Course
The course consists of two parts. At level 3 (Professional Diploma in Law) a number of compulsory subjects will be studied either over 2 years if its part time and 1 year if it is full time. This level gives students a general introduction to the law and procedure that they are likely to encounter in a legal environment. It also develops the analytical and practical skills that they will need.
Students must pass two law and two practice papers.
At Level 6 (Professional Higher Diploma in Law) four further subjects will be studied over either 2 years if it is part time and 1 year if it is full time. And those wishing to take extra five ILEX Level 6 subjects for Common Professional Examinations (CPE) exemptions as a route to becoming a solicitor, will have the opportunity to do so.
Entrance Requirement
Prospective students must have one of the following Entry requirements set by the Institute of Legal Executives
- A minimum of four GCSEs at grades C or above in academic subjects
- English Language or equivalent qualifications, such as the C&G / ILEX
Level 2 Certificate in Vocational Paralegal Studies.

ILEX Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law
The ILEX Level 6 Higher Diploma in Law is the second stage of qualification to becoming a legal Executive and is equivalent to honours degree level. The syllabus requires you to study four courses – one legal practice subject with its linked law subject and two other law subjects of your choice. It is at this stage that you will need to decide what area of law to specialise in.
